We made cup phones to observe how sounds travel better and further through solids, rather than gases. Our voices didn’t carry very far when trying to talk to our partners in a normal voice, because of the way particles in a gas are arranged. However, when talking through the cup phones, the particles in the solid cups and string meant that the vibrations carrying the sound could travel much further!
