National Coding Week

What a wonderful week we've had programming ourselves like robots here at St Stephen's.

St Stephen’s have celebrated National Coding Week this week with Miss Halliday.

YR 6 watched a video and analysed the routine. They wrote down the commands and sequenced them to match the video clip.  Children then went on to create a program to run the algorithm.  They optimised their code by using loops and a function.  Finally, children acted out the algorithm with the help of music and hula-hoops.

YR 5 watched a different video and analysed the routine. They wrote down the commands and sequenced them to match the video clip.  Children then went on to create a program to run the algorithm.  They optimised their code by using loops and a function.  Finally, children acted out the algorithm with the help of music and hula-hoops.

YR 4 had a morning of being ‘bee programmers.’  Children used floor robots known as Bee Bots. The children had to work out the sequence of commands needed to move the robot around their chosen mat.  Children worked in groups to sequence their commands correctly.  Children also explored a bee-themed coding game, where they had to program a bee to collect nectar from a flower and turn it into honey.

YR 3 watched a video clip and learnt about the sequences of traffic lights. They coloured in paper traffic lights to show the algorithm they use.  We also enjoyed a game of Apple, Orange and Banana.  The children watched a video where they had to work out what command was given for each fruit.  We then acted out our own fruit algorithms.

Can you work out the commands for Apple, Orange and Banana?

YR 2 also played the Apple, Orange and Banana game, which was lots of fun!  Year 2 then looked at dance routines.  We chose a selection of commands and sequenced them together to make our own algorithms.  Children then acted them out.

YR 1 looked at the algorithm for brushing our teeth.  We worked out the steps needed and sequenced them in the correct order.  We also analysed the song - Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and put the actions in the correct order.  Finally, we looked at number sequences and how we could use them to solve our image puzzles.

What a fun week we’ve all had!
