Growing in Knowledge, Confidence and Independence
At St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Bradford, Key Stage 2 is where children build on strong foundations and become increasingly knowledgeable, confident and independent learners.
Across Years 3, 4, 5 and 6, our ambitious curriculum challenges children to think deeply, ask questions, make connections and develop the knowledge and skills they need for secondary school and beyond.
We have high expectations for every child while ensuring that children feel happy, supported and proud to belong to St Stephen’s.
Reading, Writing and Mathematics
Strong foundations in English and mathematics remain central throughout Key Stage 2.
Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. Children encounter a wide range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry, developing increasingly sophisticated vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Most importantly, we want children to develop a genuine love of reading.
In writing, children learn to communicate with increasing confidence, accuracy and creativity, writing for different audiences and purposes.
Our Key Stage 2 mathematics curriculum develops fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, helping children understand mathematical concepts and confidently apply their knowledge in new situations.
A Rich and Ambitious Curriculum
We believe primary education should open children’s eyes to the world.
Alongside English and mathematics, children study science, history, geography, art, design and technology, computing, music, physical education, religious education, languages and personal development.
Our carefully sequenced curriculum helps children build knowledge year by year, revisit important ideas and make meaningful connections between subjects.
We want children to leave St Stephen’s knowing more, understanding more and wanting to discover more.
Developing Confident Learners
As children move through Years 3 to 6, we encourage them to take increasing responsibility for their learning.
They learn to think critically, explain their ideas, work collaboratively, solve problems and persevere when something is difficult.
Every child is different. Our teachers carefully identify where additional support or greater challenge is needed, ensuring that all children have opportunities to experience success and achieve their potential.
Experiences Beyond the Classroom
Some of the most memorable learning happens beyond a workbook or classroom.
Throughout Key Stage 2, we provide opportunities for children to broaden their experiences, discover new interests and apply their learning in meaningful contexts.
Educational visits, visitors, performances, sport, creative opportunities and wider school experiences help bring our curriculum to life and create memories that children can carry with them beyond primary school.
Preparing for Secondary School
By Year 6, our focus is not simply on preparing children for assessments. We are preparing them for the next chapter of their lives.
We want every child leaving St Stephen’s to have strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, a broad body of curriculum knowledge and the confidence to approach new challenges.
We also want them to be kind, responsible, resilient and curious young people who are ready to contribute positively to their next school and the wider world.
Nurture, Grow and Flourish
At St Stephen’s, we want every child to feel that they belong, are valued and can succeed.
By the time children leave us at the end of Year 6, we want them to look back proudly on their primary school years and look forward confidently to what comes next.
